I Keep Coming Back To This...

If a Democrat somehow manages to win the White House in 2008, and the Democrats somehow manage to take/hold both houses of Congress...

Will they have enough power to restore some semblance of democracy? Arresting and detaining some of the viler Republicans and their pet pundits as terrorist enablers would probably be a big help, but I just don't see it happening. And it would probably be wrong. Probably.

Bear in mind, they would probably only have 2-4 years to work, as they would undoubtedly be blamed for the inevitable terrorist attacks and economic collapse engendered by eight years of Republican misrule. They need to start working on that restoration-and-recovery plan now.

One thing I'm certain about is that if the Dems take one or both houses of Congress in November we'll see a campaign to discredit them unlike any before.

If people think politics has been ugly for the last ~10 years just wait.

Of course. Anything that goes wrong will be because The Obstructionist Democrat Congress didn't let Dubya The Infallible have his way.

One thing I'd like to see them do is pass a lot of attractive, common-sense bills (chemical plant security regulations, for starters) and force Bush to veto them. Then whoever the Dem nominee is in '08 can remind voters of what kinds of things a Republican president will not allow.

I might have said this before. The dems if they come to power will be fighting the GOP and the press which won't waste time tearing them down.
